“You never go wrong by doing the right thing.”
Scott Kelby’s personal philosophy from his web site
http://www.scottkelby.com/blog/about

When this is your personal philosophy it should not be surprising that an accomplished editor, author, speaker, training guru and all-around quality guy came through in the nick of time to help the students at Northrise University in Ndola, Zambia, half way around the world from his home in Florida.

As soon as Kathy Siler (Scott’s assistant) heard about what our five-person volunteer media team was trying to accomplish as we embarked on our trip to Africa, she and Scott were quick to action.  In less than 24 hours, Kelby Training provided a generous number of books and DVD-based training programs to support the students of Northrise.  We’re talking about the nice stuff, the best-selling digital photography books, along with DVD’s to guide the group through Light Room, Illustrator, Photoshop and more.

Kelby Training cared enough to go the extra mile to help out underprivileged kids in Africa by giving the gift of learning. It doesn’t get any better than that.

Our appreciation goes out to Scott Kelby, Kathy Siler and all of the folks at Kelby Training for going the extra mile, its true what Scott says, “You never go wrong by doing the right thing.”  We agree, and so do the students at Northrise University who now can learn for themselves the art of photography, video, and the power of internet media as they work hard every day to better themselves and help their country.

After being to Zambia, we wish everyone could make the trip. The people are amazing. Their passion for God, humbling. The ambition and optimism, inspiring. While it is our absolute privilege to be among the students, we are reminded that making an impact does not require a 24 hour plane trip.

Thank you, Kelby Training, for being so gracious in your giving.

I come from Ndola located on the Copperbelt province in Zambia. My main hobby is watching television, reading books and swimming. As a Northrise student I hope to help others attain a good education, especially those who don’t have the means to do so.

Media Team Launches Online Dialogue at Northrise

“Blog.”

Thirteen Northrise University students and staff members stared at a white board and pressed open the small black notebooks just handed to them. Take notes, team. This is going to be a brilliant adventure.

That’s our hope. We are five media pros armed with Nikons, a newly designed blog, and a bit of passion. We are here to push open the window so the amazing faces drilling us with questions can give a shout out to a curious world. Our goal here is to get this group online. Jumpstart the sharing of their stories. Blogging weekly. “Blog” maybe a new concept for some of them, and a new beginning into a cyberworld that doesn’t know they exist. So, here we are. University board member Danny Ortega recruited this traveling group from Washington, California and Arizona. Justin Clark is our creative link, he leads our online mission. Chairman of the Board David Cheatham and Tony Elliott unload their Nikon knowledge to push the classroom beyond the basic point and shoot. Sabra Gertsch is the reporter onboard sharing storytelling techniques. Danny is the guy with the HD video camera framing up the shots and recording the voice of each student because their stories are about to be heard.

Four days in the classroom and we are the ones getting an education. Kanyanta, Duke, Agness, Maambo, Banji, Kambole, Isaac, Andrew, the Godfreys, Enock, Mwanga, Mukupa…you have amazing perspective and determination. It is our privilege to be visiting contributors to your creative development.

Graduation. Banana trees. Chickens. Mackenzie. Arthur Davison. Imagination. Creativity. Hope. Zambia. Northrise.

Audience, we hope you will stay tuned…

I come from Northrise within Ndola, Zambia. I love playing soccer, listening to music (classical music) and playing musical instruments. My favourite instrument is the flute, but I also enjoy playing the oboe and the violin.

I envision starting a soccer academy one day to try and help get kids off the streets of Zambia. I also have hope of starting up my own website design company.
