World Malaria Day is Sunday, April 25th. Malaria is a disease that is passed through infected mosquitoes. According to the World Health Organization, a staggering 1 in 5 childhood deaths is caused by malaria, and every year approximately one million people die worldwide from this preventable disease. Insecticidal nets can easily and effectively be used to prevent malarial infection, and antimalarial medications are very low cost. Unfortunately, in Zambia these resources are often difficult to obtain, and although the medications are low cost, many Zambians are unable to afford them.
At Northrise University, plans for the Medical Clinic are underway. A primary goal of the Northrise Medical Clinic is to provide the medications to treat malaria in its early stages as well as to provide students and faculty with education around how best to protect themselves.
